Purple paphiopedilum

Here is a picture of a hybrid Paph that we purchased last February at the Southern Ontario Orchid Society show at the Toronto Botanical Gardens. It was in bloom when we purchased it and it has bloomed for us again. Many of my species suffered during the past year in less than ideal conditions, specifically lack of air circulation. The hybrids seem to have fared better. This hybrid is a cross of Paph Satchel Paige 'Jim Krull' AM/AOS x Paph sukhakulii 'Rory Jones'.

The 2009 SOOS show will be held February 14 & 15, 2009. More information and a $2 coupon off admission price can be found here.

Orchid industry hit hard by Bangkok anti-government demonstrations

The International Herald Tribune reported today that the orchid industry is losing $1 million dollars a day as a result of Thai orchid exports that have been halted this past week.

The article reports that "thousands of Thai families who raise orchids — flown to flower shops around the world — face losing their livelihoods as exporters throw away thousands of the exotic blossoms that symbolize the country's famed hospitality and beauty."

According to Hawai'i Magazine, "90 percent of all loose orchids in Hawaii are imported from Thailand."
